Advanced Lesson 6: WebDav
WebDav, also called web folders, allow PC users to open from or save to Workspace - while using other applications, like Word or Excel.
Web folders allow you to access Workspace files without using the Workspace user interface. For example, when working on a document in Microsoft Word, you can save the file directly to Workspace without having to save the file to your desktop and upload it to Workspace. To use web folders with windows XP, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the folder you would like to have as a web folder.
- Select the URL and copy it.
- Open up My Network Places. Note: This is usually attached to the start menu. If you don't see it, click My Computer and in the address bar type "My Network Places."
- Click Add a network place.
- The wizard will open. When asked "Where do you want to create this network place?" click Choose another network location.
- Paste the Workspace URL into the blank field. Replace the "gm" in the URL with "dav" (no quotation marks). Delete "folder-" from the URL (no quotation marks).
- Click Next. When prompted, enter your user name and password.
- Give the URL a more readable name. Note: Use the same name as in Workspace.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish. The folder will appear in My Network Places. In the future, when you create on a document in Microsoft Word (or other programs), you can save directly to Workspace by clicking Save As, then My Network Places, and then selecting the Workspace folder of your choice.
When you use web folders, you are not able to enable versioning or enter a description. If you use web folders, remember to change the name, description and other properties of a document by navigating to the document's information page.
If versioning has been enabled for a document, all changes you make will be saved as separate versions – just like if you are using the Edit-in-Place tool. For more information about version control, watch advanced tutorial 1.
